BMW Considers MotoGP Debut in 2027

BMW has acknowledged for the first time its contemplation of entering the MotoGP World Championship, coinciding with the sport's upcoming regulation changes.

Speculation about the German manufacturer's potential entry, alongside established names like Ducati, Honda, and Aprilia, has emerged recently, spurred by a restructuring of its management team.

Earlier this month, BMW announced the transition of Sven Blusch, former head of BMW M Motorsport known for the firm's Formula E and Le Mans 24 Hours endeavors, to lead the BMW Motorrad Motorsport division.

Meanwhile, Marc Bongers, the former division head, will shift focus to BMW's current WorldSBK endeavors.

Fueling speculation of a broader strategy to develop a new MotoGP contender, BMW Motorrad Head Markus Flasch disclosed to Motorsport.com that the company is actively considering entry into the premier class.

"2027 presents an opportune moment for potential involvement in MotoGP, coinciding with the introduction of new regulations," Flasch remarked.

"We're engaged in discussions with Dorna regarding the regulatory framework."Flasch continued, "It's a facet of our ongoing evaluation. The 2027 season emerges as a logical starting point, but we're not rushed into a decision."

Although BMW's involvement with MotoGP has hitherto been confined to supplying official safety and medical vehicles, the prospect of a racing debut has long been on Dorna's radar.

While BMW has historically rebuffed suggestions of a racing entry, the recent management restructuring may influence its future trajectory.
