In a sweeping crackdown, Derbyshire police have seized 99 illegal electric bikes, mopeds, and scooters over the span of a single month, highlighting growing concerns around the misuse of these vehicles. This impressive operation saw its peak on November 29, when 39 vehicles were confiscated in just one day.
The operation reflects increasing efforts to address the safety risks posed by unregulated e-bikes and e-scooters, as well as their role in criminal activities. Sergeant Jamie Millard, speaking on behalf of the Derbyshire force, underlined the importance of these measures:
“E-scooters can only be used on private land, and e-bikes have to meet certain requirements. Some of the vehicles we seized were a danger to both the rider and those around them, as they were rigged to go at high speeds which also carries a fire risk.”
The Risks of Illegal Modifications
Among the seized vehicles was a modified bike capable of reaching speeds of 50mph, despite having no functioning brakes—a clear example of the dangers posed by these machines. Such reckless modifications not only endanger riders but also compromise public safety. Reports of pedestrians being forced to dodge high-speed riders on pavements have only intensified local concerns.
A Community-First Approach
The operation demonstrates Derbyshire’s commitment to ensuring community safety, with the force adopting a “seize first” stance for offenders. This means that warnings are no longer issued for first-time offenses—vehicles are confiscated immediately. Additionally, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) now have the authority to remove illegal e-bikes and e-scooters from public spaces.
Sgt. Millard further emphasized the operation’s broader goals:
“We hope this action reassures the community of Derby and helps educate potential buyers about the law and risks in the run-up to Christmas.”
The Bigger Picture
While these measures target illegal activity, the crackdown is also a reminder to law-abiding motorbike and scooter riders of the importance of compliance with regulations. Proper licensing and adherence to safety standards are vital not only for the individual but for the reputation of the broader biking community.
As the holiday season approaches, Derbyshire police have pledged to maintain their vigilance, ensuring that streets remain safe for all.
Motomundis celebrates these initiatives as part of a larger effort to promote responsible riding practices. By staying informed and respecting local laws, riders can help create a safer and more harmonious
